Every year the American Library Association publishes a list of books that were challenged by people and organizations who wanted those books banned from schools and libraries. This year, independent bookstores throughout California who are members of the California Independent Bookstore Association (CALIBA) challenge you to a Banned Books Week contest! Anyone who answers all challenges correctly will be entered to win a drawing for a $100 gift card from their favorite participating California independent bookstore. Some bookstores are doing this challenge on Instagram, others through their web sites, and some are doing both!
So, ready for the challenge from the team at Reach And Teach? Below is an excerpt from a book that was challenged somewhere in America. Your challenge is to name the book and share why you think it should NOT be banned. After you respond to this challenge you'll find a list at the bottom of this page with links to all the other participating stores.
Here's your challenge... an excerpt from a banned book:
These are all the bookstores participating. Click each web site or Instagram link to check out their challenges!
And..... if you are more into Instagram, a bunch of stores are running the same contest there! Once you solve one Instagram challenge you'll be directed to the next, and on, and on.... Start with either of these two!
